Program Schedule - SATURDAY
Wildflowers Photo Presentation Continuous Saturday and Sunday Nature Center Auditorium Drop in and view images of common local wildflowers taken by Marc Evans. Saturday, April 21 (1) Wildflowers of McCormick’s Creek, Nature Center Area 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Meet: Nature Center Easy walk Join the naturalist staff to view a few of our spectacular spring wildflowers. (2) Hike Wolf Cave Nature Preserve 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Meet: Wolf Cave Parking Lot Moderate Hike Walk through the pristine Wolf Cave Area and learn about efforts to protect this important resource. Our leader is Tom Swinford, DNR Nature Preserves. (3) Taste of Nature 11:00 a.m-1:00 p.m. Meet: Nature Center Indoor drop-in session Sample some sassafras tea and pick up some recipes for tasty nature snacks. Please take time to check out the plant sale at the Nature Center. |
Friends of McCormick’s Creek
Plant Sale, 10 AM – 1PM Nature Center Also for sale: Wildflowers of Indiana, art book by Maryrose Wampler, and other items. Lunch Buffet & Menu Available at Canyon Inn 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Meet and eat with other wildflower enthusiasts! (4) Owen Putnam State Forest Tree and Wildflower ID Hike 1:15-3:15 p.m. Moderate Hike Carpool: Canyon Inn at 12:45 p.m. Location: Take Hwy 46 West for 7 miles and turn right onto Fish Creek Road. (Look for Owen Putnam State Forest Sign) Go almost 1 mile to Forest Office. District Forester, Ralph Unversaw, will lead visitors on a hike around the office area of this beautiful property. (5) McCormick’s Cove Nature Preserve 2:00-3:30 p.m. Meet: Canyon Inn Moderate Hike Guest Naturalist Laura Hohman will take you through the forest to view wildflowers and emerging ferns. |
(6) Bluebird Trail and
Grassland Habitat 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Meet: Nature Center Moderate Hike Visit an area that is being managed quite differently than most other parts of the park. We’ll look at what is being done to help provide diverse habitat for our flora and fauna. Dinner Buffet & Menu Available at Canyon Inn 5:30-7:30 p.m. Meet and eat with other wildflower enthusiasts! (7) Keynote Speaker: Michael Homoya 7:30 p.m. Meet: Canyon Inn Michael Homoya has been a botanist/plant ecologist for the IDNR Division of Nature Preserves since 1982. Author of the recently published Wildflowers and Ferns of Indiana Forests, Mr. Homoya brings a wealth of knowledge on the subject of natural areas management and plant ecology. He will speak about common wildflowers and ferns of our Indiana forests. His book will be available for purchase through the Friends of McCormick’s Creek State Park and following the talk there will be an autograph session. |

(8) Canyon Rim to Quarry Hike 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Meet: Wolf Cave Parking Lot Join guest naturalist Andrea Oeding for a hike along the Canyon Rim and through McCormick’s Creek as we look for some more bloomers. (9)Nature Notes and Crafty Creations 11:00 a.m. – 12:00pm Meet: Nature Center Create a floral inspired nature gift to take home. (10) Critter Feeding 2:00 Meet: Nature Center Observation You’ve spent the weekend getting to know the flora that the park has to offer now let’s change gears and check out some of the reptiles and amphibians that call this park home. |
